To Honor Kahauanu Lake
A Birthday Celebration – Kahauanu and Maiki Aiu Lake

Dr. Richard Mamiya Theatre  -  Saint Louis School Campus
Ticket:    $25.00  Call for reservation 599-6525

Composer and ukulele virtuoso, Kahauanu Lake, will be honored on January 4, 2009, in a Hana Hou Concert celebrating his work as part of the National Endowment (NEA) and State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) American Masterpieces program.  Mr. Lake and his wife, Hula Master Maiki Aiu Lake, were prominent Hawaiian entertainers during the 1960’s through the early 1980’s.  Their creative collaborations lead the way for a new generation of hula practitioners and Hawaiian musicians. The afternoon concert will showcase their works.

The concert will feature a talk story session with Kahauanu and dancers of Maiki Aiu Lake.  “This is an opportunity to hear the stories behind the creative process and to see first hand how these people became a hula family”, says producer and kumu hula Michael Pili Pang.  Through an appropriation from the NEA-SFCA American Masterpieces Program the original concert was presented on four major islands with guest kumu hula from each of the Islands who performed with the Lake’s during the height of their popularity.  Pang added, “our contract to present the concert series is over, but Uncle “K” wants to do another one, so we are combining the concert with his 77th birthday; which happens to be on January 2nd”.

Al Machida, the guitar player of the Kahauanu Lake Trio will join Kahauanu in sharing the stories of their career which spans over five decades. (Bass player and brother Tommy Lake passed away in 2006.)
The cast also includes original dancers of Maiki Aiu Lake:  “Gracious Ladies”: Momi Aarona Kepilino and Kealoha Wong; “Top Line” dancers: April Chock , Mae Kamamalu Klein and Dani Hanohano; the “Keiki Line” from the 60’s:  Vicky Holt Takamine, Marlene Aiu-Parpal, Lily Kahoano, Leilani Kaeo and Pohai Souza; “Kane Dancers”: Kula Abiva and Michael Pili Pang, Kahauanu’s ukulele protégé Walter Kawai’ae’a; along with Halau Hula Ka No`eau, Pua Ali’i ‘Ilima, Halau Hula Kamamolikolehua, and Halau Na Kipu`upu`u will be a part of this celebration.

This Hana Hou Concert is presented in part by the He Ola Mai Ka Lani Foundation and Halau Hula Ka No`eau.  The concert will take place Sunday, January 4, 2009 at 4:00 PM, at the Dr. Richard Mamiya Theatre on the Saint Louis School campus in Kaimuki. Tickets are $25.00 and are available by calling Halau Hula Ka No`eau at 599-6525.
