TAHITIAN DRUMBEATS WILL SHAKE UP THE SHELL
Tahiti Nui International Presents Its 6th Annual Heiva I Honolulu
The sights and sounds of Tahiti will fill the Waikiki Shell on March 13– 15 for Tahiti Nui International’s (TNI) 6th Annual Heiva I Honolulu. This year’s celebration will incorporate various workshops into its annual dance competition, a craft fair and activities.   “We are excited to present Heiva I Honolulu for the 6th year,” said Rose Perreira, V.P. of Marketing and Promotions for Tahiti Nui International. “We expect more than a thousand people from Hawaii, California, Tahiti, Japan, and Canada to attend and to share the Tahitian culture in a fun and energizing way, through music, dance, crafts and activities.”    The festivities will kick off Thursday, Mar. 13 with the solo competition ranging from ages 4 and above, all competing for the coveted title of ”Overall Best Vahine Dancer and Overall Best Tane Dancer 2008." The competition will continue through Saturday, March 15, as groups vie for the best Overall performances in the `ote`a, `aparima, ahupurotu. dances and drumming.  The `ote`a is the most popularly known Tahitian style of dance with its fast, rhythmic movements and swishing skirts. The `aparima, which translates to “kiss of the hands,” is a slower dance that uses the hands to tell a story. Contestants will be judged in each category based on their skill, grace and, for the `ote`a, speed. The winners will be awarded over $15,000 in cash and prizes.
For those interested in the colorful Tahitian culture besides dance, Heiva I Honolulu will also offer a Polynesian craft fair, weaving exercises, games and other Tahitian activities. Daily general admission to Heiva I Honolulu is $15 for adults and $10 for children (4 – 10 years old). Tickets are available at the Blaisdell box office or by phone through Ticketmaster at 1-877-750-4400. Tickets will also be available two hours prior to the events at the Waikiki Shell box office.  For more information about Heiva I Honolulu 2008, please visit TNI’s website www.tahitinuiinternational.com <http://www.tahitinuiinternational.com/> or contact Rose Perreira at (808) 732-7342 or via email at misstahiti@hawaii.rr.com <mailto: misstahiti@hawaii.rr.com>
