Mele ho'oipoipo, songs of a topical or an endearing nature.  These songs are secular (or non sacred) and tell stories of people, places, and current events.  Awakening songs for a chief or favorite child.  Mele ho'ala; song s to put children to sleep, Mele ho'ohiamoe keiki; songs to soothe children, Mele ho'onana keiki; are all songs of endearment and thus mele ho'oipoipo.  Mele Ho'oipoipo proper, or wooing songs, were usually chanted as ho'aeae, the emotional chanting style considered appropriate for love poems.  With the advent of Western music, mele ho'oipoipo became increasingly popular and were frequently adapted to the new folk style.  Traditionally, as well as today mele ho'oipoipo were accompanied by dance
