....in the 1860's the rulers and chiefs of the kingdom openly reverted to the old custom of having hula people, po'e hula, available to provide entertainment, both at home and during their travels about the islands. There was thus a nucleus of po'e hula who kept the art alive, and from them have come the traditional 19th-century hula that some call "ancient" today......
