Before the greenery of the hula altar was put in place, the supporting posts were wrapped in ti leaves....
The versatile leaves were also used, completely without irreverence, for all sorts of domestic purposes, ranging from rope to food wrapping to cough medicine.
This is always the green variety. (Colored ti was imported later and has no traditional value of protection.)
