In mythology the pa'u is associated with protection, sorcery, and healing. Hi'iaka's pa'u was used to protect her against the malevolent mo'o lizards and through the aid of its magic. Hi'iaka succeeded in exterminating these terrifying creatures. Her healing powers are symbolized in the materials of the pa'u which were composed of palai fern, also used in herbal medicines.
