The hu'elepo (literally "dust scattering") needed but an offering of a fish, ceremoniously called a "sea-hog," such as a kumu or mullet.  The aka or essence of the feast belonged to the patron deity of the hula, but the material was ours to eat.  The bones and whatever was left of the feast were consigned to the sea.  Before partaking of this sacrificial feast, the pupils went outdoors to dance in the sunlight.  A pupil was not permitted to dance or chant for an audience without having first gone through an 'uniki or hu'elepo graduation.
