....the kumu hula, or leader, does not go with the group to gather the greens, the po'opua'a or head student or his assistant, the paepae, supervises its gathering....
....the required greenery must be removed from the parent plant with respect for the god-forms it represents, avoiding unnecessary destruction...
...the person sent for the greens "must have no fear and under no circumstances should he utter a sound besides the prayers. There were times when the invisible woodland spirits protested against the breaking of their plants and demanded to know what he was going to do with them. To these angry voices he must give no reply and must go about his business as though stone deaf. He went home without a backward glance no matter what he heard."
