The oli, using two or three notes, is intended for formal subjects and specific occasions and is the chant type used in all non-metered chants not intended for dancing.  The mele hula are distinctly rhythmic and usually cover a larger vocal range of four to seven notes.  Because of this wider tonal range and individual expression by performers, greater variety is possible in the mele hula.
