Päkahi Käne/‘Ölelo Award in Hula ‘Ölapa

 

Kulu-wai-maka Ka-pihe-nui Pälea (aka James Pälea Kuluwaimaka), Ka‘ü, Hawai‘i: chanter, composer, and teacher at royal courts, Kamehameha IV through Kaläkaua dynasty. Composed “housewarming” chants, opening ‘Iolani Palace, 1881.

2. MARY KAWENA PÜKU‘I ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Päkahi Wahine/‘Ölelo Award in Hula ‘Ölapa

 

Mary Abigail Kawena‘ula-o-kalani-ahi‘aka-ika-poli-o-pele-ka-wahine‘ai-honua Wiggin, Ka‘ü, Hawai‘i: teacher, chanter, composer, writer, translator lexicographer, 20th century’s foremost Hawaiian scholar. She has published many books, among which is the Hawaiian Dictionary, completed in 1957 with Dr. Samuel Elbert. Mentor of hula exponents such as the late Lokälia Montgomery, Mary Kawena Pükui is widely recognized as the premier source of the Hawaiian culture. Her daughter, Pat Bacon, continues her work.

Hälau/‘Ölelo Award in Hula ‘Ölapa

 

Edith Ke-kuhi-kuhi-pu‘u-one-o-nä-ali‘i-o-kohala Kaeao, Honomü, Hawai‘i: dancer, chanter, singer, composer, translator, and poet. Noted scholar, teacher, Hawaiian linguist, ethnobotanist, genealogist, and Polynesian historian. Founded Hälau O Kekuhi. Her daughters, Pualani and Nälani, continue her work.

4. PUA HA‘AHEO ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Samuel Pua Ha‘aheo, Lä‘ie, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i: chanter, teacher, one of the last great male chanters born in the 19th century; regarded as one of the most distinctive and influential teachers. Known for this deeper-than-usual chanting voice and prowess with pahu, püniu, and ‘ili‘ili.

5. LOKÄLIA MONTGOMERY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Päkahi Oli Award

 

Lokälia Montgomery, well-known kumu hula and chanter studied with many notable masters, among them Kawena Püku‘i. She was recognized for her clarity and vocal resonance and expressiveness as a master chanter.

6. MAIKI AIU ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Päkahi Wahine/Hula and ‘Ölelo Award in Hula ‘Ölapa and Hula ‘Auana

 

Maiki Aiu: dancer, teacher, choreographer, and composer. Founded Hälau O Maiki in 1946. The hälau is known for its training of haumäna in gentle mannerisms and dance discipline. Aunty Maiki was also one of the Charter Founders of ‘Ahahui Ka‘iulani established in 1975. Her daughters, Karen and Coline, carry on her work.

7. HENRY MÖ‘IKEHA O KAHIKI PÄ ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Henry Mö‘ikeha O Kahiki Pä, Hilo, Hawai‘i: teacher, dancer, chanter, and choreographer. “The young, in order to perpetuate the hula, must be encouraged to research, communicate, meditate, and then dare to create – to express their souls in their dance and oli (chant that is not danced to). ‘Onipa‘a nä mea Hawai‘i apau… Hold fast to all things Hawaiian…” Founded Ka Pä Hula Manu. His hänai (adopted) son, Mai-kahikina-pamai-kala, continues his work.

Rose Kapulani Joshua established the Magic Hula Studio in 1947. Her daughters, Lorraine and Blossom, continue to teach modern and traditional hula in Waikïkï. “There is nothing more uplifting than to see my haumäna going out into the community and passing on the style of hula that was handed down to them.”

Kau‘i Zuttermeister, Kahana, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i: dancer, chanter, and teacher. She taught the traditional hula of Hawai‘i for over sixty years. She was the niece of Pua Ha‘aheo. Her daughter, Noenoelani, continues her work.

10. HELEN DESHA BEAMER ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Wahine Hälau/Hula and ‘Ölelo Award in (1)Hula ‘Ölapa and (2)Hula ‘Auana

 

Helen Kapu-ai-lohia Desha Beamer, Honolulu, Hawai‘i: learned hula from her mother, determined to please even the most puritanical critics, originated graceful, smoother (minus hip-wiggle) “Beamer Method”. Taught hula 1902 to 1940’s at Hilo home. Prolific poetic composer; compositions include Keawaiki, Lei Ka‘ahumanu, Kimo Hula, Ku‘u Lei Momi, and Kawohikükapulani.

Emma Kapi‘olani Farden, Lähaina, Maui, Hawai‘i: dancer, chanter, composer, teacher, and member of famous family of musicians, dancers, and singers. Instructor in ancient and modern hula since 1925. Composer of Leis, Hula O Pakïpika, Nani ‘Ulupalakua, and other songs.

‘Iolani Luahine, Napo‘opo‘o, Hawai‘i: dancer, chanter, teacher, High Priestess of the Hula, and for more than a generation regarded as the foremost exponent of the ancient dance. Subject of two film documentaries: Ho‘olaule‘a-The Traditional Dances (1961) and ‘Iolani Luahine-Hawaiian Dancer (1976).
